No, we’re not encouraging you to loaf on the job. We want to give you some pointers on how to cut down on energy use at work. (Sorry!)
When it comes to lighting, task and location specific lights are better than overheads. Turn out lights when you leave a room. Lessen use of lights when outdoor sunlight will suffice. When it’s time to replace fixtures, go with compact fluorescents. After hours, turn off devices such as computers, copiers, coffee makers and vending machines. Finally, be proactive. Look for other ways to reduce consumption, like opening window blinds in the day and closing them at night, watching for leaks or equipment problems that waste resources and evaluating consumption patterns for reduction opportunities.
Missouri’s Department of Natural Resources has a great checklist to reduce workplace consumption here.
