Every year the US produces about 12.5 million tons of glass and roughly 30% of it gets recycled. Virgin glass is made from a mixture of sand, soda ash and limestone. Recycled glass can be added to this combination to lessen the use of other ingredients and reduce the air pollution by-products created in the process by nearly 20%. Glass recycling saves over 25% of the energy that is needed to create glass with virgin materials and the glass recycling process employs roughly 30,000 workers nationwide.
