You’re probably aware by now that analog TV signals have disappeared forever. If this makes it a good time to consider a new TV purchase, naturally there are steps you can take to make it the greenest decision possible.
First, decide which type of set to buy – LCDs and plasmas are greener options than the traditional cathode ray tubes. Plasmas are not made with lead or mercury, so their environmental impact is better, but they generally use far more electricity. Seek out models with Energy Star endorsements, so you can feel confident about your choice. Further, give thought to the size of your set. The smaller the screen, the less energy you’ll use. Finally, don’t forget to recycle your old set(s). Charitable organizations, a friend or neighbor, or a qualified recycling center are all appropriate destinations for the TVs you plan to replace.
