Baby Steps

It’s a good idea to get kids thinking green at an early age, but there are several things you can do in infant care to give your child an eco-friendly head start.

Cloth diapers, preferably from organic materials, are an obvious starting point, of course.  But beyond that, there are other less “intrusive” steps available to you.  Begin by looking for baby food (again, organic if possible), that is packaged in reusable jars or recyclable boxes.  Buy one large container of baby wipes and then buy refills instead of new containers.  For shampoos and lotions get the largest sizes possible and look for recyclable containers.  Select laundry soap that is vegetable-based, not petroleum-based.  In addition to being better for your child, it reduces the use of fossil fuels.  Finally, if you use cotton balls, buy 100% cotton, not ones infused with polyester. Choose cotton swabs with spindles that aren’t made of plastic.
