One of America’s greatest and most legendary natural attractions is the Appalachian Trail. The trail moves uninterrupted along the Appalachian mountain chain from Maine to northern Georgia, for 2,176 miles. Over 3 million people at all levels of hiking skills travel at least some segment of the trail each year. It’s estimated that each year over 1,500 hikers journeyed at least 2,000 miles.
Since 1925, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy has been the non-profit organization that manages and preserves this American treasure. It works in conjunction with the National Park Service. Thirty different regional clubs within the organization assume responsibility for day-to-day work, in projects that include rehabilitating and maintaining the trail and gathering information about the habitat it calls home. Everyone can play a role in protecting the Appalachian Trail. Find out more here.
