If it’s too cold for outdoor gardening right now, remember it’s always houseplant season. The keys to success are very similar and fit into 3 categories – soil, water and air.
Your potted plant has 2 basic soil needs. First, don’t over-fertilize. Indoor vegetation photosynthesizes more slowly, so they need less nutrition. Second, take care of the root system by pulling the plant out of its pot at least once a year. If the roots are tightly wound, you need a larger pot and some fresh soil. When it comes to watering, don’t overdo it. Overwatering is the greatest contributor to houseplant deaths. Finally, be aware of the indoor air. Particularly in winter months, dry air and low humidity cause problems. Make sure you keep plants away from direct exposure to vents. If you’re planning to be away for awhile, consider placing a loose fitting clear bag over the plants before you go, to encourage condensation.
