It’s an ideal time of year to get your whole family thinking about living a greener lifestyle.
Recycling is a great place to begin. Encourage family members to put disposables in the proper place. Once kids are old enough, increase their involvement by asking them to inspect the week’s recyclables before the materials hit the curb. Talk with family members about the ways they can help to conserve resources. There are plenty of examples you can discuss, including effective management of your thermostat, limiting water usage in baths and showers and recycling used items instead of throwing them away. Look for teachable moments with your kids. Make the conversations as fun and interactive as possible. Think about ways to create games that reward family members’ behavior and participation. Most importantly, lead by example. Once green behavior becomes routine, it’s easy for every person to make contributions for a lifetime.
