It’s still early enough in the year to resolve to save energy and spend less money in the process. Start with an inspection of your energy bills from the past 2-3 years. Do see anything unusual? Usage patterns or peaks & valleys? Are you diligent in cold weather months, but less so in summer?
From there, it’s time to tour your home. First check the perimeter for possible air leaks that can pull up to 10% of your energy right out of the house. Next examine your appliances. Electric usage monitors can tell you if they’re drawing too much juice. Physical examination can reveal things like loose fitting refrigerator seals. A look at food items and the temperature dials can reveal if settings are too cold. Check your water heater to see if it’s running too hot. Then inspect your HVAC unit(s). Furnace filters should be clean and frequently replaced. Check your ductwork for leaks and any outdoor air conditioner units for wear or excessive dirt. Be proactive in all these areas and then monitor your bills. There’s a very good chance you’ll see the progress you’re looking for. Our friends at The Daily Green.com have more information here.
