We all want a little guidance in picking healthy groceries. Certification labels are helpful, but only if you know the whole story. Here are some examples:.
American Heart Association – authorizes use of its “heart check” symbol in products with approved levels for fats and cholesterol. It does not consider sugar content or the presence of other unhealthy ingredients.
USDA Organic – certifies that foods are grown without pesticides and artificial fertilizers. Certified organic animals have been fed organic food.
Low Glycemic – products have a small effect on blood glucose levels, but it doesn’t mean the product doesn’t contain artificial sweeteners or other unhealthy ingredients.
Hormone Free/Trans-Fat Free – can be misleading statements. The FDA doesn’t allow hormones to be added to any produce products and allows manufacturers to include up to 0.5 grams of trans-fat per service and still be considered trans-fat free. Learn more about label certification nuances at
